Johan van Aswegen

Johan van Aswegan is an enamelist and jeweler born in Namibia, Africa. He studied under the famed Professor Hermann Junger in Munich, Germany before moving to the US in 1996 to teach at Rhode Island School of Design. Johan works in the age-old tradition of creating jewelry as a personal marker or monument. His pieces point to life events yet transcend such personal origins, speaking to cultural ideas about death, ornament, and royalty. He makes historical references to classic forms and iconography and is incorporates bold colors and graphic lines. The tone of Johan’s work is monumental. While extremely wearable, the work balances magnetic charm with subtle bling
