Milan based Akiko Kurihara creates minimalist jewelry with a clever and humorous twist. Trained at the world-renowned Academy of Fine Arts Munich, Akiko’s work is inspired by casual discoveries in daily life with an eye towards making the mundane playful and poignant. Her interest in jewelry started early when, as a young girl in her hometown of Sapporo, Japan, she would wear cut and folded images of rings from the newspaper. She believes that jewelry is like a poem. Like Haiku authors that dare to choose such a simple form and yet are able to compress infinite images into short sentences, jewelry can communicate a riveting story with only a few small parts. With her poetic, witty and discreet jewels, Kurihara connects to the person who wears her work as well as to the ones who see it.
